Department Head, Advanced Technology Development Applied Research Laboratory The Pennsylvania State University The Composite Materials Division, part of the Materials and Manufacturing Office at the Applied Research Laboratory at The Pennsylvania State University (ARL Penn State), seeks to hire a Department Head for the Advanced Technology Development Department (ATDD). The general emphasis of the ATDD is rapid technology development, transition, and implementation, with a focus on cost effective composite manufacturing processes. The primary responsibility of the Department Head is the establishment and sustainment of a strong research and development program in advanced composites, with particular emphasis on defense applications. The Department Head is also responsible for proposal development, customer briefings, and frequent written report submissions, as well as supervision of a team of researchers, engineers, and technicians, potentially ranging in seniority from entry level to PhD scientists. Rank will be commensurate with education level and experience. Minimum educational requirements include a MasterÕs degree (PhD preferred) in Material Science, Engineering Science and Mechanics, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field, plus ten years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in material science and composite manufacturing is highly desired. The ATDD has a charter to engage non-traditional customers with a view to identifying emerging materials and manufacturing technologies that may provide a long term benefit to the established sponsor base. Therefore, the ability to network and collaborate with University faculty, who are engaged in exploratory and foundational work, is considered advantageous. You must provide a proven track record in the conception, program development, and execution of complex research and development programs. A minimum of 10 years of experience in advanced composites development is required. The position requires highly developed schedule planning and project execution skills, along with demonstrated ability in personnel management. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, are considered critical. You must be committed to working in a diverse workforce. You will be subject to a government security investigation, and you must be a U.S. Citizen to apply.
